Melbourne: Despite an impressive performance in the quarter final against Germany, Pakistan could not avoid a crushing 5-2 defeat in first semi-finalĀ of Champions Trophy played in Melbourne against Netherlands on Saturday.
The Dutch crushed Pakistan in almost every aspect of the game, shattering all the Pakistani hopes to earn a place in Champions Trophy final.
Holland with their dense defence, nippy attack and sharp strategy qualified for the Champions Trophy Final after six years.
Netherlands went onto the field on a high as they scored their first goal just 1:30 into the game, Billy Bakker giving his team the quick advantage. Seve van Ass netted the second goal for orange shirts with 15 minutes left in the half.
Pakistan opened their score with a goal three minutes later, what it appeared as Holland putting the ball into their own net, though the lead further stretched to 3-1 when Bakker again scoring three minutes left in the half.
The second half initiated with the same spirit, high on aggression and dominated by Dutch. Valetnin Verga scored fourth goal 10 minutes into the half. Shakeel Abbasi scored last for Pakistan few minutes before the game.
The Dutch will play their ninth Champions Trophy gold medal tomorrow against India or Australia. The last time the Netherlands won the gold medal at the Champions Trophy was 2006, which was also their last appearance in the final game.
