Washington: Food allergies are rearing their head worldwide because of pesticides and chemicals in tap water, says an immunological research.
Elina Jerschow, the assistant professor at of medicine and the head of the research, said that chlorinated water contained a chemical dichlorophenols which was used in pesticides also. The chemical was found responsible of food allergies in the human body, he added.
“This chemical is commonly found in pesticides used by farmers and consumer insect and weed control products, as well as tap water,” IANS quoted Jerschow as saying.
“Other dichlorophenol sources, such as pesticide-treated fruits and vegetables, may play a greater role in causing food allergy,” said Jerschow.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an increase in food allergy of 18 percent was seen from 1997-2007.
The most common food allergens are milk, eggs, peanuts, wheat, tree nuts, soy, fish, and shellfish.
