Islamabad: A heavy grant of 150 million dollars was announced by the United States of America on Wednesday for the expansion of Mangla Dam power plant.
After further development of the project, the dam is expected to produce 310 megawatts of electricity.
The grant was announced by US Ambassador to Pakistan Richard Olson during the inauguration ceremony of the project at Mangla Power House, who said the US would provide 150 million dollars for the extension of the Mangla power station.
Olson said that the construction of the Diamir-Bhasha Dam was a priority for the US added that a meeting of the Energy Working Group would be held in Islamabad the next month.
Addressing the ceremony, Chairman Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) Syed Raghib Abbas Shah said an estimated amount of $400 million dollars is required for the expansion of the Mangla power house which would provide additional production for the next 40 years.
“The fourth phase expansion work will begin in March 2012,” he said.
Shah further said that the feasibility report of five mega projects was under process of completion.
