Islamabad: Pakistan is an independent country and International Court of Arbitration cannot allow lease to any international company working here.
The Supreme Court of Pakistan gave these remarks during the hearing of the Reko Diq case at the court.
Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry remarked to counsel of Tethyan Copper Company Pakistan, Khalid Anwer Advocate that he hadn’t challenged any decision of the Mining Committee. “The committee hadn’t given you a lease for mining.”
Earlier, Khalid Anwer Advocate said that it is his plea that the company be granted mining lease. He said that he wants to nullify decision of the committee in the ICA. He opined that the ‘junior officers of Mining Committee do not consider themselves governed by the constitution’, adding that it is the responsibility of the apex court to ensure that.
Supreme Court of Pakistan was conducting hearing against the federal government’s decision to lease out gold and copper mines in Reko Diq in Balochistan to foreign companies.
