New Delhi: The co-operation between Saudi Arabia and India in tackling terror elements has seen a rise in past year and now the kingdom has deported two terror suspects to India.
According to media reports, India authorities Monday arrested Fasih Mahmood, a member of terror group Indian Mujahideen and a suspect in bomb blasts in Bangalore and Delhi, soon after his deportation from Saudi Arabia.
According to Indian media reports, Mahmood, 35, an engineer from Bihar, was arrested on arrival at Delhi airport.
He is alleged to have been involved in the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium blast in Bangalore and an explosion in Delhi, both in 2010. Both Delhi and Karnataka Police were hunting for him to stand trial.
Reacting to the Mahmood’s arrest, Home Secretary R.K. Singh said: “It is a very important catch.”
The home secretary said that Saudi Arabia had never stated that Mahmood would not be deported but it took some time.
He said Mahmood was a key facilitator for 13 Indian Mujahideen terrorists who were arrested from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi over the last year.
R.K. Singh said India submitted “material evidence” against Mahmood to Saudi Arabia to press for his deportation.
He said Mahmood was deported after he had served a sentence in Saudi Arabia.
On the other hand, Saudi authorities handed over to India a suspected LeT operative, who was wanted by Kerala Police in connection with a 2009 explosive haul case.
A Rayees, believed to be an associate of banned Pakistan-based terror outfit’s member Thadiyantavide Nazir, was deported to Mumbai where he was arrested by Kerala Police about a fortnight ago.
Rayees was named as the third accused in a case relating to seizure of ammonium nitrate from Chakkarakkal in Kannur in 2009. During the period of investigation, he had slipped out to Saudi Arabia.
Ammonium nitrate, a controlled commodity, is frequently being used by terrorists to carry out blasts.
Before the deportation of Rayees and Fasih, Saudi Arabia had deported Abu Jundal, an alleged handler for the terrorists who ravaged Mumbai in India’s worst-ever terror attacks in November, 2008.
