Sanaa: At least four suspected al-Qaeda affiliates were killed in a U.S. drone attack on a car in Yemen, tribal sources and local officials said.
According to media reports, the strike hit a car in the south-eastern province of Maareb, a mostly desert region where militants have taken refuge after being driven from southern strongholds.
U.S. has increased drone strikes in Yemen, backing the country’s forces to take over al-Qaeda militants, a serious concern for U.S, Saudi Arabia and to nearby shipping channels.
Al Qaeda militants exploited a security vacuum during last year’s uprising that ousted President Ali Abdullah Saleh. But, later Yemini forces recapturedthe territory and pushed back militants to the desert and mountainous regions of the country.
While Washington usually avoids comment on the strikes in Yemen, the UK-based Bureau of Investigative Journalism, which tracks U.S. operations, says as many as 56 civilians have been killed this year by drones.
