Tokyo: A Tokyo court ruled on Friday that Samsung Electronics’ mobile devices did not violate an Apple Inc patent ordered it to pay costs of the lawsuit to South Korean technology giant after the verdict.
Tokyo District Judge Tamotsu Shoji awarded the Samsung a victory a week after it lost a landmark patent case in the United States for copying key features of the popular iPhone.
The U.S. jury awarded Apple $1.05 billion in damages and it is now seeking speedy bans on the sale of eight Samsung phones in the U.S. market.
“It’s hard to believe the products belong to the range of technologies of the claimant,” Shoji said in dismissing Apple’s case.
Samsung’s shares rose as much as 1.6 percent after the ruling, and were trading at 1.227 million won at 2:08 p.m. in Seoul.
