Islamabad: The five-member bench of the Supreme Court of Pakistan on Friday continued the hearing of the petitions against the new contempt of court law.
The bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry comprises Justice Shakirullah Jan, Justice Tasaduq Jilani, Justice Jawad S Khawaja and Justice Khilji Arif was hearing the case.
During the hearing today, the petitioners continued their argument in the case. Raja Afrasayab said that the parliament could not approve the constitutional definition of the contempt of court by simple majority, adding that the Constitution was clear on the contempt.
Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jilani remarked that the article 204 of the Constitution provides immunity to no one, adding that the contempt of court bill was a violation of the Constitution.
Justice Jawad Khawaja remarked that the people who made the Constitution of the country were respectful. He added that Bhutto’s respect increases whenever he read the Constitution.
Moreover, he said that the people who gave unanimous Constitution were ideological, adding that the dictators deformed the Constitution. Justice Khawaja said that the members of parliament were the servants of the people and they take salary from masses.
The Chief Justice remarked that it was not a time for stories. He added that they want and trying for the continuity of the democratic process.
The CJ said that they had concerns over the parliamentary debate as references from the Constitution were not given by the lawmakers. He added that apparently the law was made to provide protection to few people.
Later the SC adjourned the hearing of the case till July 30 (Monday).
