Washington: US President Barack Obama celebrated the nation’s 236th birthday today at the White House.
On the occasion, Obama welcomed 25 active duty US service members as new American citizens.
“Immigration makes America stronger” and “positions America to lead in the 21st century”, he said in a speech.
Obama celebrated the event with a naturalization ceremony at the White House for active duty US service members.
Along with military heroes and their families this evening, Obama and the first lady will host a Fourth of July celebration with a barbecue, a concert and a view of fireworks on the South Lawn.
Meanwhile, Mitt Romney took a break from vacationing at his lakeside estate in New England to march in the local Independence Day parade through the center of Wolfeboro, N.H., this morning. It’s their only official public appearance during a weeklong family break from the campaign trail.
Wednesday also marks the 14th birthday of Obama’s daughter Malia.
Though tens of millions of people are celebrating the holiday, still more than one million people still without power, many Americans are not in a very celebratory mood.
