Dhaka: At least 69 people have been killed in various parts of Bangladesh due to heavy torrential rains over the past several days in the country.
According to local media, most of the deaths occurred due to hill slides, house collapses and electrocution. “Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar and Bandarban districts recorded the maximum number of casualties,” the media said.
“Rains have resulted in suspension of flight operations and snapping of rail communication with the port city since Tuesday. Though water started tracing back after a week of downpour in Chittagong, the situation in Bandarban and Cox’s Bazar deteriorated on Wednesday,” bdnews24.com reports.
At least 13 people were killed in Chittagong city and Banshkhali area of the district in hillslide triggered by heavy rains, while wall collapse and electrocution killed five more on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, another hillslide at Lama upazila in Bandarban has killed at least 24 people, while a house collapse at Naikhyongchari killed another six, the report quoted District Commissioner K M Tariqul Islam  as saying.
Another 21 people were killed across Cox’s Bazar from hillslides, wall collapse, drowning and lightning.
Weather office said until 9pm on Tuesday, 462.5 milimetres of rainfall was recorded in Chittagong, submerging almost two-thirds of the port city.
