Islamabad: Dr Fehmida Mirza, the National Assembly Speaker, on Monday submitted her reply in the Supreme Court of Pakistan as a three-member bench of the apex court resumed the hearing of the petitions challenging the speaker’s ruling rejecting plea for disqualification of Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani after his conviction on contempt of court charges.
The bench headed by the Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry comprises Justice Jawad S Khawaja and Justice Khiliji Arif Hussain.
Aitzaz Ahsan, counsel for the PM, had been directed to conclude his arguments by Monday (today).
On Friday, Aitzaz sought formation of larger bench in view of the importance of the case. He submitted that no lawmaker could be disqualified unless jailed for two years. He said Gilani was convicted but not disqualified. The speaker had exercised her discretion to reject plea for unseating him. He reiterated that top court’s conclusion that Gilani had ridiculed the judiciary entailing disqualification was not part of the charges framed against him.
