Karachi: The highly-provocative, fast in news breaking and entertaining electronic media industry is estimated to expand its businesses with worth of $3 billion cumulative investment by the end of the current financial year 2011-12.
There has been a cumulative investment of approximately $ 2.5 billion in the electronic media industry by March 2012, this was revealed by Pakistan Economic Survey 2011-12.
The investment will likely to grow with expansion of infrastructure by TV and Radio channels particularly for coverage of upcoming general elections will be held by the end of the 2012 or next year.
On the other hand, there are few TV channels granted licenses by Pemra are preparing to be live in the current year after completion of their test transmissions.
According to the survey, more than 200,000 new jobs with diversified skills and qualifications have been provided. Among them, there are news anchors, news director, editors, VJs, RJs, reporters, cameramen, copy-editors, non-linear editor are major positions in the industry.
Additionally over 7 million people have been accommodated through indirect employments, the survey reports, in which people are working in PR, media buying and research companies, advertising firms and private production studios.
The electronic media in Pakistan has recorded tremendous growth in a decade in terms of audience reach and business both by television and radio has significant reach.
TV channels have become the strongest form of media to perform all four functions, i.e. information, education, influence and entertainment due to its potentials to offer a greater variety than other elements of electronic media.
Pakistan Television Corporation (PTV) broadcasts began in 1964. Today, PTV has six channels, one of which, PTV Global, broadcasts in Europe, Asia and the US. PTV News is a dedicated news channel and PTV National sends programs in the many different languages of Pakistan.
PTV’s state monopoly was ended in 2003 when the market for electronic media was liberalized. This led to the boom in new private TV channels that today transmit soaps, news, dramas, and talk shows millions of viewers.
The private channels have been issued licenses for cable or satellite only, which means that PTV is the only channel that provides terrestrial services to the population.
After the de-regulation of electronic media sector, TV sector remains vibrant. By now, in Pakistan has more than 50 TV channels of which 15 are major news channels, 32 primarily entertainment and three religious.

Radio Pakistan began its broadcast on 14th August 1947 as a government department. Radio Pakistan through 25 stations located at as many places in the country is on air for 24 hours daily both on Medium Wave and Short Wave. In the home service using 20 languages and dialects it reaches 75 per cent of the area and 95 per cent population of the country.
After the liberalization of electronic media more than 120 licenses had been issued for private FM radio stations. Pakistan’s media regulator estimated that the country could support more than 800 private radio stations. However, private stations are only allowed to broadcast music and entertainment
