Damascus: UN observes confirmed on Wednesday that at least 13 more people were brutally killed in Syria amid the international pressure on the country after the Houla massacre, which saw hundreds of deaths, including many children.
Bodies of men were found with their hands tied behind their backs near the eastern city of Deir al-Zour. UN mission chief Maj Gen Robert Mood said he was “deeply disturbed” by the “appalling and inexcusable act”.
With Western powers all set to take action against the Syrian regime, Russia and China opposed foreign intervention.
According to BBC, a Russian minister ruled out any action by the UN Security Council soon, saying Moscow “categorically” opposed foreign intervention.
Earlier, most countries expelled Syrian ambassadors on Tuesday after the tragic Houla massacre. Now Turkey has also joined in and is expelling all Syrian diplomatic staff from Ankara.
A UN report Tuesday said 49 children and 34 women were among the 108 people who died, but it did not decisively say who carried out most of the killings.
Since the uprising began in Syria against President Bashar al-Assad in March last year, around 15,000 people have been killed.
