Karachi: Pakistan’s renowned physician Dr Adibul Hasan Rizvi appeals Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan to release Prof. Mehmet Haberal on humanitarian grounds.
Letter issued form Transplantation Society of Pakistan says “we wish to appeal to Recep Tayyip Erdogan for the release of Prof. Haberal who is being detained in Turkish jail since 2009.”
Here is the open letter of TSP to Turkish Prime Minister:
On behalf of the Transplantation Society of Pakistan which is a collaborating body of the Middle East Society of Organ Transplantation we wish to appeal to Your Excellency, Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdogan for the release of Prof. Haberal who is being detained in jail since 2009. His trial was completed in 2010 but although he has not been charged his continuing incarceration has become a violation of human rights. Turkey our brother country has strong traditions of democracy, justice and fair play. In the name of thousands of patients of transplantation in Turkey who were operated upon by Prof. Haberal are deprived of his care.
Prof. Haberal is the founding President of MESOT and his tremendous contributions have lead to the promotion of ethical transplantation in the region. Being involved right from its inception, Professor Haberal has provided continuous support and guidance to MESOT. As a Council Member of The International Transplantation Society (ITS) he represented the MESOT region and commanded great respect from the colleagues in the ITT. Prof. Haberal is the first to start transplantation in the region of which we are proud of in the region.
SIUT is proud to have Prof. Mehmet Haberal as a friend and supporter. He has visited Karachi several times, the last time in 2008 as chief guest to inaugurate the international conference organized by SIUT. Prof. Haberal has been instrumental in training our doctors in the field of kidney and liver transplantation.
Professor Haberal has achieved great honours but still remains a humble human being with the sufferings of patients touching his heart. He has devoted his life for the well being of humanity. During 2005 earthquake disaster of northern areas of Pakistan, he was the first to send a plane full of relief goods to the earthquake stricken areas. Due to his help a dialysis centre has been established in Muzaffarabad which is providing 4,000 free dialysis sessions per year.
Your Excellency please consider this as a humble request for the sake of humanity. We do not wish to interfere in the administrative affairs of your country, but knowing Professor Haberal for over two decades, we strongly believe that he is a great physician who has been treating the very sick patients of end stage organ failure and deserves to achieve freedom at the earliest.
