New York: A medical examiner after an autopsy said on Thursday Mary Richardson Kennedy, the estranged wife of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., died of asphyxiation due to hanging.
Kennedy died yesterday in her home in Westchester County, New York. The Bedford Police Department declined to give more information as probe is still under way.
“We know from a history of this family, it’s very hard being a Kennedy, either being a blood Kennedy or being married to one,” CNN quoted Laurence Leamer, a Kennedy biographer, as saying. “The overwhelming celebrity, the attention, the obligations, the expectations that you’re supposed to do something with your life. It’s very, very hard.”
According to NBC, Kennedy separated from her husband two years ago. At the time, she was battling drug and alcohol addictions. In May 2010, she was arrested for a DUI.
“We deeply regret the death of our beloved sister Mary, whose radiant and creative spirit will be sorely missed by those who loved her,” the Kennedy family said in a statement on Wednesday. “Our heart goes out to her children who she loved without reservation.”
“We have no further comment at this time.”
In 1968, Robert F. Kennedy Sr. was assassinated in California, four years after President John F. Kennedy’s assassination.
