Chapel Hill, North Carolina: The last week’s votes regarding gay marriage showed that much work was still needed to be done in the US regarding civil rights, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg told University of North Carolina graduates as reported by AP.
While speaking to thousands of graduates at Kennan Stadium, he said Americans have slowly understood since this country was founded that if the government can deny freedom to one person, it can deny freedom to everyone.
He said that every coming generation should work more for the civil rights in the country. He said he expected the present generation to continue the work for freedom in the US, especially in the wake of last week’s vote in North Carolina approving ban on same-sex marriage.
The university’s motto, “Light and Liberty,” should be the defining spirit of this century, he added.
