Washington: Former Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum endorsed presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney on Monday night in an email to supporters.
Santorum suspended his campaign in April this year.
Political analysts saw the endorsement as unusual, not in public but in an email.
“Governor Romney will be that nominee and he has my endorsement and support to win this the most critical election of our lifetime,” Santorum said in the email.
Santorum further said he was “comfortable” with Romney on foreign policy and has faith the former Massachusetts Governor will work to overturn President Obama’s health care law.
“While I had concerns about Governor Romney making a case as a candidate about fighting against Obamacare, I have no doubt if elected he will work with a Republican Congress to repeal it,” Santorum’s email stated.
Santorum waited to formally announce his support for Romney until the two met face-to-face on Friday. He did not say whether he will stump for the presumptive nominee in the coming months.
However, judging from the timing and format of the email, as well as the many differences Santorum still points out between the two men in what was meant to be an endorsement email, few see Santorum as taking on the role Hillary Clinton did for then-Senator Barack Obama in 2008 – pushing full-force for him after she conceded the primary election.
