Karachi: American investors will be encouraged to invest in Pakistan’s coal sector during Federation of Pakistan Chamber of Commerce & Industry FPCCI delegation visit to USA.
This was relayed to visiting President Pakistan Chamber of Commerce-USA Waseem Rahim who visited FPCCI office here on Saturday and met leading members of business community. Shaikh Haroon Rashid, Vice President FPCCI thanked Rahim for visiting FPCCI to explore opportunities for cooperation between FPCCI & PCC-USA.
Haroon Rashid said FPCCI was in process of organizing visit of high powered delegation to Washington, New York, Chicago and Houston later this year which will provide Pakistani businesses opportunity to meet their counterparts and promote Pakistani products in American market more actively.
He said Pakistan would like to have product placement deals with US retail giants for key sectors such as textile, footwear, leather, for which PCC-USA may be able to provide assistance. FPCCI was exploring viability of organizing a B2C event in Houston by end of year.
Rahim said PCC-USA was organizing a Trade Forum this year, which may be held to coincide with FPCCI delegation’s visit. He said coal was used to generate 45% of energy in US and Pakistan still lagging far behind, despite having large coal reserves.
He said owing to prohibitive cost of alternative energy, fossil fuel based energy would remain dominant for at least next few decades, and Pakistan must capitalize its coal reserves more effectively to ease burden currently borne by gas sector, which would eventually facilitate other key sectors, such as fertilizers. He said participation in Trade Forum this year would allow Pakistani businessmen to highlight opportunities for investment in energy (particularly coal), infrastructure and other key areas of Pakistan’s economy to American business community.
