Los Angeles: Coil-shaped remains of lava have been found near Mars equator, say researchers
The discovery was made by Arizona State University graduate student Andrew Ryan, who looked at about 100 high-resolution images of the planet.
On Earth, lava coils can be found on Hawaii’s Big Island and on the Pacific seafloor. While there’s evidence of lava flows in many places on Mars, this is the first time they’ve been shaped like this.
“The coils become noticeable in the full-resolution HiRISE image only when you really zoom in,” Ryan emphasized.
The largest lava coil on Mars is 30 meters (100 feet) wide, much bigger than any known lava coils on Earth, he explained.
