London: Rupert Murdoch, chairman News Corporation, tendered an apology over his handling of the News of the World phone hacking scandal.
The tabloid was shut down by the chairman last year after it had emerged that reporters were hacking into the phones of celebrities and murder victims.
Mr Murdoch confessed the cover-up of hacking at News of the World, but he knew he was responsible being a publisher.
“There was no question in my mind that maybe even the editor, but certainly beyond that, someone took charge of a cover-up, which we were victim to and I regret that,” he said.
“I think the senior executives were all misinformed and shielded from anything that was going on there.”
He said he had thought the practice was only limited to only one particular reporter before the severity of the scandal had been revealed.
The News of the World’s royal editor and a private investigator were detained and jailed five years ago for phone hacking but the industrial scale of the practice at the paper did not emerge until the launch of a new police investigation last year.
