New York: The UN Security Council is to meet to vote on a resolution to send a 300-member observer mission to monitor a ceasefire, which went into effect in Syria on April 12.
The draft of the resolution was drawn up by Russia and it is scheduled to be voted at the UN Security Council later on Saturday.
The ceasefire was part of a six-point peace plan proposed by UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan in March.
The text of the draft calls on all parties, including the opposition, to stop the violence and demands the immediate implementation of the peace plan.
Russian ambassador to the UN Vitaly Churkin has called for a “unanimous vote” on the text.
According to Annan’s spokesperson Ahmad Fawzi, there are “seven observers on the ground” in Syria and “two more are arriving on Monday to bring those on the ground to nine.”
“We will make the number up to 30 sometime during the course of next week.”
