Rotherham, Yorkshire: Forklift trucks and hydraulic platforms are being used by the firemen crews in a Rotherham town of Yorkshire to rescue obese people from fire and to help the ambulance crew move fat people to hospital, The Telegraph reported.
Earlier, at least five firemen in the past two years had injured their backs while rescuing obese people, resulting in the loss of 13 working days, a report revealed.
A report commissioned by Rotherham council noted: “South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue crews have had a number of firefighters injured while carrying out such rescues, usually muscular skeletal injuries, including back and muscle strains.
“As with any emergency situation, the risk for injury to staff is minimised but the rescue of people in these circumstances tends to be problematic due to the limited space in traditional houses, especially hallways and stairs.”
