Jakarta: The tsunami warnings issued in 28 different countries after a strong earthquake with preliminary magnitude of 8.9 in Indonesia on Wednesday, have been withdrawn.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre (PTWC), in its latest bulletin withdrew its tsunami warning issued after the massive earthquake off western coast of North Sumatra in the afternoon.
Indonesia geophysical agency, which recorded 8.9 magnitude earthquake of Aceh, has also withdrawn tsunami warning.
The residents of coastal areas who left their houses in several countries, especially Indonesia, Thailand and India have now been asked to go back to their houses as threat has diminished.
Indian media said the tremors were felt in Kolkata, Bangalore and Gohati. “Tsunami warning has been issued in 28 countries including India and Sri Lanka,” the report said.
Tsunami warning in Sri Lanka was also cancelled.
Experts said that earthquakes of this size have the potential to generate a widespread destructive tsunami that can affect coastlines.
