8.2 magnitude aftershock hits Indonesia

Jakarta: Minutes after an earthquake of magnitude 8.9 hit Ache city of Indonesia, another aftershock of magnitude 8.2 struck the city.

It was originally reported to have been an 8.9, and then it was downgraded to 8.7, and then to the current level is 8.6.

However there are no specific reports of damages (yet).

The tremors were also felt in  Kolkata, Bangalore and Gohati. “Tsunami warning has been issued in 28 countries including India and Sri Lanka,” the report said.

Earthquakes of this size have the potential to generate a widespread destructive tsunami that can affect coastlines across the entire Indian Ocean basin.

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono:

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono told reports in the capital that there had been no tsunami reports so far, “but we remain vigilant”.

“Our warning system is working well, and I have ordered the national relief team to fly immediately to Aceh to ensure the situation is under control and to take any necessary action,” he said.
