Islamabad: Ten Independent Power Producers (IPPs) in Pakistan have warned to shutdown power plants if the government fails to pay their arrears, an amount exaggerated to Rs. 320 billion, till April 19.
The country is suffering from the worst power crisis in almost all cities compelling citizens to turn to the violent protest.
“IPPs have decreased power generation to about 50 percent after their dues have crossed all time high limit,” official sources informed.
“Non-payment to petroleum companies as well as IPPs is the main cause behind power outags now touching peak level of up to 20 hours.”
On the other side, as water outflow from national reservoirs decreases, generation of hydral power has decreased to 2,000 Mega Watt (MW) from 6,000 MW.
The whole situation has made power and supply demand gap in the country to 7,000 MW.
IPPs which have issued notice to the government include Nishat Chonian, Nishat Power, Liberty, Atlas, Hall-more, Safe, Saffire, Orient, Ravish and Saba Power companies.
As the electricity situation becomes a catastrophe, spokesperson of Water and Power Ministry has said that unannounced load-shedding has been finished. He claimed that another 400 MW power would be added to the national power grid, as a bid to reduce timing of load-shedding.
