Karachi: Chief Justice of Pakistan, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has said that the nation should empower itself through its own capabilities and resources rather than relying on money of different countries at the cost of sovereignty and self-esteem of country.
Speaking as chief guest at the annual dinner hosted by Karachi Tax Bar Association (KTBA) on Saturday, he said that the tax evasion has been rampant in our society owing to increasing corruption and misuse of public money causing lack of public confidence our system.
People should be educated and facilitated for paying taxes which is a way to empower country financially and strengthen its sovereignty, he said and adding that public money should be avoided wasting for vested interest.
CJP urged that the system should be made transparent with complete check and balance and zero tolerance for corruption in order to gain public confidence in this regard. “Honesty, integrity and transparency coupled with corruption-less environment can trigger the economy as well as tax collection.”
In the given constitutional framework, the responsibility of the judiciary increases manifold to maintain a steady course and move forward in realizing the state objectives of national stability, consolidation, peace, tranquility and taking steps in achieving economic growth, political stability, social progress and prosperity, he added.
The independent and impartial judiciary is a catalyst for change in a society because if justice is delayed or denied, public confidence will be shattered, the law and order situation will be jeopardized and consequently, the wheels of commerce will come to a grinding halt.
He outlined the main features National Judicial Policy that included the independence of judiciary, eradication of corruption at all levels of the judicial hierarchy, reduction of the backlog of all categories of cases and introduction of essential judicial reforms.
Referring Karachi situation, he said recognizing the importance of strongly emphasised that it is crucial that the judgment of the Supreme Court is implemented in letter and spirit to restore peace in the city of Karachi.
The judiciary has resolved to protect the hard earned money of taxpayers and bring it back to public exchequer from the culprits.
