Islamabad: As the incumbent Director General Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) is going to retire on March 18, the government is said to be mulling over to name his successor instead of giving extension to him for the third time.
The DG ISI has earlier been given one-year extension twice and now he is unlikely to get another one.
Private Geo Television reported that Prime Minister Gilani, who is the appointing authority of the DG ISI, is considering five name to pick one of them to succeed General Ahmed Shuja Pasha, current DG ISI.
The names who are being considered for the post are Lt. General Javed Iqbal, Lt. General Zaheer-ul-Islam, Lt. General Rashid Mehmood, Lt. General Muhamamd Asif and Major General Noshad Kayani.
The appointment of Pasha’s successor has assumed greater significance in the backdrop of recent tensions between the civilian government and the military establishment though of late the tension has deescalated to a greater extent. Though the prime minister has the exclusive authority to appoint the future spymaster, but it is unlikely that the civilian government would take the decision arbitrarily without military’s inputs.
