Lahore: In a bid to please the fertilizer mafia, the government has imported urea which caused Rs60 billion loss to the national exchequer.
According to details, the production capacity of local fertilizer factories is 6800,000 tons as compared to 6200,000 tons required domestic demand but the factories has been closed for two months due to suspension of gas supply. If government had supplied gas of Rs2 billions to factories it would have saved 60 billions rupees.
Instead, 900,000 tons of fertilizer had been imported in the first phase at the cost of Rs45 billions while 300,000 tons fertilizer would be imported in the next phase which would cost Rs15 billions.
