Srinagar: Suspected militants shot dead a ruling party (National Conference) worker at Batamaloo area of summer capital Srinagar on Saturday morning.
Police said suspected militants fired from point close range towards the NC worker identified as Bashir Ahmad Bhat at Batamaloo area this morning while he was leaving home for work.
He sustained critical bullet injuries on head and was rushed to SMHS hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
Bhat was a shopkeeper by profession.
Immediately after the attack, police and paramilitary men deployed in the area launched a massive combing and search operation in Batamaloo to arrest the militants responsible for the attack. However, no arrests were reported.
No militant group has owned the responsibility of the killing so far.
Police sources said Bhat’s father Muhammad Jamal Bhat, who was block president of National Conference, was also killed by suspected militants in 1996.
