Srinagar: With the night temperature witnessing continuous fall in the region, Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian administered Kashmir recorded the coldest night of the season at – 3.8 degrees Celsius, resulting in freezing of water supply lines in many areas.
“The minimum temperature in Srinagar fell to – 3.8 degrees Celsius, making Friday the coldest day of the winter season so far here,” an official of weather department said.
The drop in the night temperature resulted in freezing of water supply lines in many areas while a thin layer of ice had also formed on some small stagnant water bodies.
At many places especially in the city suburbs, people were seen lighting small fires around the taps to de-freeze them.
As a precautionary measure, Water Works department has resorted to snapping of water supply during night to prevent any damage to the pipes.
The weather department official said Gulmarg skiing resort in north Kashmir recorded a low of – 7.8 degrees Celsius while the Pahalgam tourist resort in south Kashmir recorded a minimum temperature of – 6.6 degrees Celsius.
“Qazigund in south froze at a minimum temperature of – 4.2 degrees Celsius while the minimum temperature in Kupwara in North Kashmir plunged to a low of – 4.1 degrees Celsius,” he said.
He said in Leh district of Ladakh region, the mercury plunged to a low of – 13.0 degrees Celsius.
“The dry, cold weather conditions are likely to continue for another two to three days after which we are expecting some relief from the present cold wave in the Valley,” the official said.
Kashmir is less than a week away from ‘Chillai Kalan’, extreme chilling weather period of 40-days, which begins December 21.
