Islamabad: Islamabad: Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has remarked that neither Benazir Bhutto was interested in National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) nor she benefited from it.
A full court bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice was hearing the NRO review petition.
The CJ asked government’s counsel Babar Awan to read BB’s book in which she wrote that she was not interested in the NRO. “Benazir said Musharraf wanted to promulgate NRO,” the CJ added.
“Benazir was a great personality and court respect her while you are trying to bond her with a piece of paper (NRO),” the CJ told Awan.
“BB was a daughter of a man who never tolerated any wrongdoing,” the CJ went on say.
The CJ said that Interior Minister Rehman Malik and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani didn’t take advantage of the NRO and faced their cases in court. “There is a prime minister in place who sacrificed a lot,” Justice Chaudhry said.“Couldn’t Gilani take advantage of NRO,”he added.
Babar Awan said graves of Bhutto family members were being tried in the courts. “Don’t give political statement here,” they warned Awan.
Awan said he wanted to produce some important document with reference to the case. The CJ ruled that no new document could be presented during the hearing of review petition as it was the decided principle.
Meanwhile, Awan completed his arguments and the bench went for a break.
