ISLAMABAD: Hussain Haqqani, Pakistan’s ambassador to the United States, who is in the midst of a political storm stirred by his alleged letter to Mansoor Ijaz arrived here in Islamabad to explain his role in the issue that has created the biggest crisis for the PPP-led coalition government.
Haqqani, who reportedly sent the memo to Pakistani-American businessmen Mansoor Ijaz for delivering to Admiral Mike Mullen , was summoned to Islamabad by the prime minister to explain his position regarding the memo.
The ambassador went straight to the President’s House from the Air Port to discuss the issue with President Asif Ali Zardari. He would present his point of view over his role in issue to the leadership of the country.
In the memo, allegedly written on the behalf of President Asif Ali Zardari, US’ support was sought to remove top generals of the country . Television channels have reported that phone records prove that Haqqani asked Ijaz to write the letter.
It is to be mentioned here that Haqqani has already offered to resign, saying that he was ready to reign if it defuse the crisis.
According to the sources, President Asif Ali Zardari would meet Husain Haqqani on Sunday morning.
