New York: HTC Corp, the world’s fifth-largest smartphone maker, has created space in the U.S. market after record sales which is more than its bigger rivals including Apple Inc, Samsung Electronics Co and Research in Motion ltd (RIM).
According to reports, HTC shipped a total of 5.77 million smartphones in the U.S. Meanwhile, Samsung took second place in the U.S. by shipping 4.9 million smartphones.
Apple fell to the number three spot with 4.6 million iPhones shipped during the most recent quarter. Apple also fell behind Samsung in terms of worldwide scale, with only 17 million iPhones sold. Apple blames this on the delay in launching the iPhone 4S, which came nearly four months later than many expected it to, the report added.
But experts contend that Apple is expected to bounce back and could beat HTC and Samsung during the fourth quarter.
“This is a great achievement for HTC, which become a premium brand in a competitive market in just a few years,” Canalys analyst Chris Jones said in a statement.
HTC and Samsung has taken benefit from the rising popularity of the Android operating system, while Apple was affected by consumers awaiting the next iteration of the iPhone, Canalys said. Android has 44 percent of the U.S. market for smartphones in use, Apple’s iOS has 27 percent, and the BlackBerry OS 20 percent, Reston, Virginia-based ComScore said earlier this month.
