Islamabad: The British High Commissioner to Islamabad, Adam Thomson has said that the women can bring positive change in their homes, cities and even societies.
This he said during a function, which was organized by British High Commission here on, Monday. The theme of the event was “Women as agents of change”. This year, the Commonwealth is celebrating women as agents of change.
The British High Commissioner said that by investing in women and girls, countries could accelerate social, economic and political progress.
“The Commonwealth is an important international forum for the UK, Australia and Pakistan, bringing together over two billion people from 54 countries – one third of the world’s population. The UK is committed to playing a leading role in developing its links with the Commonwealth. Today we recognise these unsung heroes of Pakistan”, he added.
He said it is very important to recognise not just those inspiring women in the public eye but also those who work hard to bring a better life to those in their communities. He said that Pakistan has many such women, both from its history to those that are active in society today.
“This is just a small example of the important role that women play in Pakistan every day. It is vital that Pakistan continues to encourage the involvement of women in all aspects of society, and we continue to support the government of Pakistan in achieving this,” he added
On the occasion, a video was also shown to the participants to recognise the inspirational stories of women in Pakistan from Fehmida Mirza, Speaker National Assembly, to Zahida Kazmi, Pakistan’s first woman taxi driver as well as other exceptional women from politics, business, NGO sector and arts.
