Dhaka: West Indies defeated Bangladesh by 40 runs here in the first of their three-match series thanks to a brilliant century by opener Lendl Simmons.
Asked to bat by Bangladesh, West Indies scored 298 runs for the loss of 4 wickets in 50 overs. Simmons scored 122 with the help of eight fours and two sixes. Samuels scored 71 and Pollard 41. Rubel Hossain took three wickets.
Bangladesh managed 258 runs, losing seven wickets, in the 50 overs. Former captain Shakib al Hasan scored 67 not out off 58 balls, but he failed to push the run rate to the required level as the top order had left too much to be done. Opener Naeem Islam scored 52 off 82 balls and one-down batsman Imrul Kayes 42 off 52 balls.
Russel and Samuels grabbed two wickets each.
Simmons was declared man of the match.
The second one day will be played on Oct 15.
