Peshawar: A US drone fired two missiles in Pakistan’s north western tribal region, killing at least four people and injuring several others, sources said on Thursday.
According to media reports, a logistic commander of the Haqqani network Jamil Haqqani was also killed in the attack. The reports stated that the alleged commander used to oversee logistic affairs of the group. The Haqqani network is accused of launching attacks in Afghanistan on US and Nato targets.
According to the sources, the unmanned aircraft targeted a vehicle in Dande Darpakhe area of North Waziristan Agency.
Relations between Pakistan and the United States have been at the lowest since a series of allegations by the American officials against the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) of Pakistan.
The US officials accused the ISI of using Haqqani network, a strong faction of the Afghan Taliban, as proxies in Afghanistan to secure Pakistan’s interests after the US draw down in the war torn country.
The attack took place at a time when US special envoy for Pakistan and Afghanistan is visiting the country in a bid to ease tensions between Pakistan and the US.
Pakistan has long been opposing the drone strikes, declaring them counterproductive.
