Karachi: At least six people have been killed in different parts of Karachi in a fresh wave of violence after the verdict given by Supreme Court of Pakistan over target killing incidents and extortion cases on Thursday and rejoining of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) in PPP-led government, police and rescue officials said.
Aerial firing and arson incidents were also reported in various areas of the metropolis, including Korangi, Orangi Town, Landhi, Gulistan-e-Jauhar and New Karachi. Two vehicles including a passenger coach were set on fire in Bilal Colony area of Korangi Town, fire brigade officials said.
Two torture-marked bodies were recovered from Surjani Town and Lyari areas.
Meanwhile, Sunni Tehreek has claimed that Ranger personnel killed his activist, Zaheer Qureshi, in Samanabad area of Gulburg Town.
Ranger officials, however, rejected the claim, saying at the time of the incident Rangers were not deployed in the area. They said the ST activist was mistakenly killed by the firing of his associates when the victim was forcing shopkeepers for closing their businesses amid Friday strike against the death sentence awarded by the Lahore High Court to Mumtaz Qadri.
Religious parties have announced shutter down strike across the country on Friday to express solidarity with Mumtaz Qadri – who assassinated former governor Punjab Salman Taseer.
Unidentified assailants also killed a man in Karimabad, while two people were injured in Sector 14 area of Orangi Town.
Tension prevailed in different areas and business activities have started closing amid aerial firing and arson incidents.
Heavy contingent of police and Ranger have been called in tense-stricken areas, but no accused was yet arrested.
Meanwhile, Rangers have also carried out operation in Sango Lane area of Liyari Town.
