Mogadishu: A US drone has crashed in the southern region of Somalia as violence continues to intensify in the war-torn country.
According to Somali government officials, the US drone crashed in the south Somalia town of Kismayo located about 500 kilometers (310 miles) south of the capital Mogadishu. The Kismayo port is under the control of Al Shahab fighters.
Witnesses say a powerful explosion was heard in the region.
Further details of the incident have not yet been released.
The US has recently escalated its drone operations in the starvation-hit country.
Somalia is the sixth country where the US military has engaged in unauthorized aerial bombing campaigns through the use of its remote-controlled aircraft.
The US has also deployed its so-called drones for aerial attacks in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Libya, Iraq, and Yemen.
Washington claims the airstrikes target militants, though most of such attacks have mostly resulted in civilian casualties.
