Geneva: The United Nations human rights office said that executing Moammar Gadhafi without trial would be illegal.
The rebel leadership has offered a $2 million bounty on the fugitive Libyan leader’s head.
A spokesman for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNCHR) says “summary executions are not permissible in peacetime or in wartime.”
Rupert Colville told reporters in Geneva on Friday that capturing Gadhafi alive and handing him to the (ICC) International Criminal Court that has issued a warrant for his arrest “is the best solution.”
Colville says the global body has been unable to verify casualty figures and reports of abuses by rebels and Gadhafi loyalists in Libya.
