Cricket selectors in Pakistan have got the weirdest minds in the cricket world. They drop somebody from the team only to make him the captain after six months. Many examples can be cited here, but the most recent one was Misbahul Haq who was dropped for the tour to England last summer and was made captain after a few months.
The boys ignored (or rested as they say it) are the most unfortunate victims of these pathetic minds. Tanvir Ahmad and Wahab Riaz, both of who formed the pace attack in the last test against the West Indies—Pakistan won that test match—were ‘rested’. What rubbish? Both of them have just begun their careers. Do they really need rest?
Wahab Riaz started his career in the tour to England last year. He was injured during the first test against South Africa and missed the second test. Then he did not play in the early games of the World Cup. And after the World Cup, Pakistan played only seven one day games and two tests. So why does he need to rest?
Similar is the case of Tanvir Ahmed. He started his career in the series against South Africa. Then in the tour to New Zealand he played two tests and a T20 game. He was ignored for the one day series. Then he was unjustly kept out of the squad for the World Cup. In the series against the West Indies, he played only one test and a one day game. Then he played a match in the tour to Ireland. Do the selectors think he is too tired after playing four tests, two one day games and a T20 game in about a year?
Do our selectors know how much cricket the Indian players have been playing? Not only their players are representing their national team, but they have also been appearing in the IPLs which never seem to be ending.
It’s true that they have given chances to some young players in the Zimbabwe tour. But the guys overlooked are also not ten-year-olds in international cricket. They too are newcomers in international cricket. Preferring one newcomer over another just because these newcomers have played half a dozen matches is absurd. If this is the plan, then we might see a new pace attack for every series. How strong it will make the Pakistani team is not difficult to guess.
And then the curious case of Ahmed Shehzad. He was given opportunities in the World Cup despite repeated failures and dropped only after he had failed in quite a few matches. But even then they included him for the tour to West Indies. He scored an impressive century there. But now he has been overlooked. What rubbish! He was not dropped despite complete failure in the World Cup. But he has been dropped after he made a century.
I think we will never be able to develop a better team if we keep selecting and dropping players in this manner. Look at India. They did not drop Suresh Raina although he mostly failed in the test series.
