Baghdad: Three bombs blew up near a busy market and a religious site in southwestern Baghdad on Thursday, leaving at least 41 people dead and wounding over 100, official source said.
The blasts occurred in quick succession in the al-Shurta al-Rabaa district of Baghdad, capital of Iraq.
An Interior Ministry source said that explosives were transported to the market in wooden carts usually used to carry merchandise.
The source put the toll at 41 dead and 107 wounded. Sources at three local hospitals said at least 35 were dead, with 94 wounded.
Baghdad’s security operations centre put the initial toll at 11 dead and 70 wounded.
Violence has dropped sharply in Iraq since the peak of sectarian slaughter in 2006-07 but insurgents still carry out bombings and other attacks on daily basis.
Insurgents have targeted Iraqi security forces in recent days. Four people died and nearly three dozen were wounded on Wednesday in a series of attacks on police in the capital and the northern city of Mosul.
