Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tahreek e Insaaf has staged two dharnas in the country, one in Peshawar and the other in Karachi. Now the Jamat e Islami has announced its plans for dharna on Saturday and Sunday next in Karachi.
What is peculiar about these dharnas is that the organisers announce the date and time when these are to end. It was announced much before PTI’s dharna began that it will end on Sunday evening. Similarly, JI has announced when its dharna will begin and when it will end. Isn’t it ridiculous?
The problem is the wrong use of words. A dharna is a protest which is supposed to end only when the protesters’ demands are met. A protest which is scheduled to end at a particular time already is only a demonstration not a dharna. Just rethink the word dharna in your mind. It means sitting at a place to obstruct daily life until your demands are met.
Since this is not the case with the protests organised by either PTI or JI, they should not call their protest demonstrations dharna. They can call it a public meeting or whatever but not a dharna. If they want to call it a dharna they should not leave their place unless the government changes its policies as they want.
