Washington: The Top US commander of coalition forces in Afghanistan has warned of increased attacks against his troops over the summer.
In a memorandum to the International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) the US four-star General David Petraeus said insurgents will carry out high-profile attacks this summer in a bid to show off their ability.”These attacks may increase the risk of civilian casualties and put Afghan and Isaf forces in difficult situations,” Gen. David Petraeus said in a memorandum published on the Isaf website.
“In the face of such enemy actions, we must continue our efforts to reduce civilian casualties to an absolute minimum,” he further said.Comments of General Petraeus come as deaths in a US night raid in northern Takhar province led to a two-day long angry demonstration last week. Hundreds of people took to the streets to protest an overnight raid carried out by US troops in a village in northern Takhar province.Taliban militants have carried out some deadly attack after the group annouced the launch of its spring offensives.
Hajji Mohammad Hashim, an Afghan MP representing northern Faryab province said that civilians have so far been the main victims in almost all attacks.”This year has been described as the “make-or-break” year by coalition troops and it is also of huge importance to Afghan future because it will witness the beginning of two crucial processes, including security transition and US troop’s gradual withdrawal. Meanwhile, Senate House expressed concern about security situation in the country.The Senate House urged the government to take some serious measures for security and stability.
A number of Senators accused chiefs of the military hospital of being linked to the attack inside the hospital. Yesterday the Afghan national army hospital, the biggest military hospital in Afghanistan, came under a suicide attack that led to the death of six people while dozens were left hurt. Senate House decided to no longer summon Afghan officials and to work on a new initiative to drag the country out of the current security challenges.
