Now it’s Libya’s turn. Few people had anticipated that Libya would be the target after Afghanistan and Iraq. Most had expected it would be Iran since it has been the strongest opposition to US interests in the Middle East.
But there is no need to attack Iran for the United States. Because the United States already sits in Afghanistan and Iraq, both its neighbours.
Moreover, there seems to be no immediate need for the United States to attack another Asian country. It is already firmly placed in almost all important positions in the continent. Controlling Libya would be far more fruitful for the United States-led capitalist world. Why? First, because it is an African country. The Western world wants to have a strong footing in Africa, where China has been penetrating fast. Africa is the least developed continent of the world but has great importance because of its natural resources. If the United States, together with its allies, can have its forces in Libya (so far there have been attacks only by air forces, but movement on ground can’t be ruled out), they will be in a very strong position to thwart the Chinese dominance of the region in the decades to come.
China’s influence in African countries has been increasing over the years since it has invested heavily in exploration of mineral wealth there. It has also been helping countries in Africa, South Asia and Southeast Asia set up new ports, which will strengthen its naval position in the world. The United States will also be able to effectivey answer such moves by having a government of its choice in Libya.
The Western world has already achieved a great success in the continent early this year by securing a referendum in favour of division of Sudan. South Sudan, which will separate from North Sudan, is richer in natural resources. Control over Libya would further strengthen the position of the Western world in the continent.
Although most Arab governments have been under the influence of the United States for more than 30 years (so has been Libya for a long time), these countries have been ruled by dictators and kings. Supporting them has given the United States a bad name. Now it wants to change that by supporting in the region governments that are democratic–superficially though–but under its firm control as before.
The uprising in Tunis and its impact on the psyche of the rest of the Arab world’s people has given a golden opportunity to the United States to achieve its purpose. In almost every Arab country, there are people whom the United States can use to form governments of its choice such as ElBaradei in Egypt.
The Western world didn’t want to attack Libya, but they had to. Gaddafi proved tougher than Mobarak. He was about to quell the uprising altogether. This would have meant an opportunity missed. But they chose not to miss it. They chose to use force and impose democracy on Libya. Like they did in Afghanistan in 2001 and Iraq in 2003.
