Washington: Around 1.5 to 2 million Google email accounts, known as gmail accounts, and its data have been temporarily lost owing to unknown and mysterious reasons.
The Google administration is unable to tell about the reason of the lost. Complaints are flooding in to Google after some Gmail users woke up to find that their inboxes had been wiped clean of messages.
Google is promising to restore the accounts, but can’t confirm a timescale for doing so.
A number of Gmail forum posters report that their messages, labels and settings have all been set back to default. The consensus is that it is a problem on Google’s end, with many people deeply concerned because many of them use Gmail as their main email account.
Google said it affected less than 0.08 per cent of the Gmail user base. This doesn’t sound like a big number, but considering that the Gmail user base is in the millions that still amounts to thousands of people losing their emails.
Already a major glitch for Google’s cloud technology, this will be horrendous public relations disaster if there is no backup system in place. The company is trying to sort this out quickly.
The issue began yesterday afternoon US time. While Google’s first status update says 0.29 percent, later reports say the company revising that down to 0.08 percent. Those may both sound like tiny figures but, given Google is closing in on 200 million Gmail users, we’re talking somewhere between 150,000 and half a million people affected.
Although the firm says it has restored access for some users, there are reports that some people have logged back in to find their account is being treated as if it were new, with no archived messages and even a couple of welcome messages from Google. That’s hopefully just a temporary bug that can be fixed from Google’s own backups, but it must be a pretty scary sight.
