Islamabad: At least 49 percent Pakistanis have switched over to energy savers, followed by 34 percent who claim to use tube lights and 14 percent bulbs, a survey said.
According to a Gilani Research Foundation survey carried out by Gallup, the Pakistani affiliate of Gallup International, a nationally representative sample of men and women from across the country were asked the following question: “What do you use to light up your house?” 49 percent claimed to use energy savers to light up their house, 34 percent tube light and 14 percent said ordinary bulbs. 3 percent gave no response.
It may be noted that those who use energy saving devices may be using other devices as well. Hence these figures show the penetration of energy saving devices but not their total volume of use.
A detailed analysis of the data revealed that energy savers are comparatively more popular with the urban dwellers (59 percent) as compared to the ruralites (44 percent). The findings also showed that the consumption of energy saver increases with the household income.
The recent survey was carried out among a sample of 2631 men and women in rural and urban areas of all four provinces of the country, during February 2011. Error margin is estimated to be approximately + 2-3 per cent at 95 percent confidence level.
