Washington: Al-Qaeda number two Ayman al-Zawahiri has released his first comments on the people’s revolt in his home country of Egypt which toppled president Hosni Mubarak, US monitoring websites said.
The speech is titled, “A Message of Hope and Glad Tidings to the People of Egypt,” and is said to be the first part of a series, SITE monitoring service said in a brief statement.
The 34-minute video was produced by Al-Qaeda’s media arm, the as-Sahab, and posted on jihadist forums on Friday, SITE added. But the video was said to contain only a still picture of Zawahiri. SITE said a translation of the speech would be made available later.
Al-Qaeda, which has long advocated that violence is the only way to overthrow regimes, has yet to respond to the demonstrations in Egypt which caused Mubarak to step down last week after some three decades in power.
