Cairo: Egypt’s President Hosni Mubarak on Friday resigned as president and handed over government powers to the military after unprecedented protests of 18 days.
Mubarak ruled over Egypt for at least 30 years and was considered staunch supporter of the United States and Israel. Tens of thousands pro-democracy protesters had besieged the presidential palace on Friday before he resigned.
Vice President of Egypt Omer Suleiman read out the resignation statement of Mubarak and said Mubarak had turned over his power to Supreme Council of the Military, headed by Defense Minister Gen. Mohammed Tantawi.
As Suleiman read out Mubarak’s resignation, thousands of pro-democracy protesters at Al-Tahrir Square greeted and hugged each other, The News Tribe correspondent in Egypt reported.
Muslim Brotherhood, the main opposition party, paid rich tributes to the military for supporting the nation.
Hosni Mubarak was born on May 04,1928. He became President on October 14, 1981, following the assassination of then president Anwar El Sadat.
