Karachi: Member National Assembly and chairman National Assembly’s standing committee on Kashmir and Northern Areas, Prince Mohiuddin has said that former president Gen Pervez Musharraf had accepted his invitation to contest next general elections from Chitral.
During an exclusive interview with The News Tribe in Karachi, Prince Mohiuddin, who is also a member of ex-royal family of Chitral, defended his decision to invite the former military ruler to contest election from Chitral, saying that Gen Musharraf had rendered unprecedented services for the people of the remote area. “His (Musharraf) services for the people of the areas are matchless,” he added. He enumerated various development projects executed during the former dictator’s regime, including the Lowari Tunnel project, which connects Chitral with the neighbouring Dir district through a 10-kilometer tunnel, providing an all-weather road to the area.
It is to be mentioned here that Prince Mohiuddin has recently, during a meeting in Dubai, offered the former military ruler to contest from his own constituency in the next election.
To a question as to how he invited Musharraf, who is facing serious legal and political challenges including the charge of abrogation of Constitution, to contest elections, he said it was not his personal decision, but the electorates of his area wanted the former president to come back and contest election from the area.
“The people and elders of the area through resolutions demanded him to invite Musharraf to contest elections from Chitral due to his services for the area.”
When asked as to how he would defend the military ruler who is being blamed for the challenges facing the country, the lawmaker said Gen Musharraf had committed some mistakes during his rule for which he publicly tendered apology. However, he defended his (Musharraf) decision to join the war against terrorism after 9/11, saying that Pakistan is a small, poor and developing country and could not stand up to a superpower like the US.
To a question regarding the current political scenario, the PML-Q (like-minded) lawmaker said though the government was facing some serious challenges, there was no imminent threat to the government. “The government is not going to collapse in near future. It is confronting with many challenges like economic meltdown and governance and transparency issues. However, I don’t see any impending danger to the PPP-led government,” he added.
