Islamabad: In pursuance of Supreme Court order to compensate pilgrims, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Saturday allocated funds and directed authorities concerned to compensate the affected pilgrims, who performed Haj under the government scheme this year.
The prime minister instructed the authorities concerned to pay 700 Saudi Riyals each to 26,600 affected pilgrims, who were accommodated at Maktab No 49 to 54.
The pilgrims faced immense hardships due to lack of accommodation as most of the buildings hired for them were at least 5 km away from the Haram in the Holy city of Makkah.
A large number of pilgrims had to stay on footpaths and roads due to apathy of Pakistan Haj Directorate in Saudi Arabia.
A three-member Supreme Court bench, headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, had directed the government to compensate the pilgrims.
